My brother Carl, being of proper age, had to register for the dr aft but enlisted before his number was called. He wanted to choo se the branch of service and had noticed an advertisement in th e newspaper advising that the newly established tank corps was l ooking for men who were familiar with gasoline engines. So he wa s assigned to the tank corps and was sent to Camp Meade, Marylan d and later to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Two future notable offi cers in the corps were Dwight Eisenhower and George Patton who m we all came to know in World War II. Carl also served in Franc e, on the Argonne Front.
In the spring of 1919 Carl returned home and it just happene d I was sitting on the front porch of our home and saw him wal k up the sidewalk. It was quite a thrill for me.
